Wasteland, CA 95811

Just one week after Sacramento's Tent City was shut down, a chain link fence surrounds the region. The Sacramento Municipal Utilities District has plans to repair the power lines that once hung above a homeless community that flourished at a maximum of approximately 300 people.

While some people were helped to find shelter, rehabilitation and permanent housing, others are still hiding with their tents along the American River.
The City of Sacramento announced a 10-year plan to combat chronic homelessness during June of 2009. They also reported a 35% drop in homelessness from 2007 until now.

Kathleen Walker stands with neighbor David Cuch beside a fire. "While it's dark and more dangerous at night here, having a pit bull and friends you can trust makes things a lot easier," said Walker. Tom (last name withheld) stands outside his tent the morning Sacramento's tent city is shut down. "I've lived around this area with my wife for almost nine years," said Tom. "We like this way of life--the freedom-- I don't have to answer to the governmenet or worry about paying bills."
